The Rushville Animal Shelter offers low-cost euthanasia for pet owners. We recognize that many pet owners need to make the difficult decision to euthanize their pet, but may not be able to afford the service through a veterinarian.
Owner request euthanasia agreement
- Our service is $40 – no matter the size of the animal
- We accept cash, check, and card (3% fee for card)
- We can euthanize cats, dogs, and many small animals
- An appointment isn’t necessary, but we do recommend calling ahead so we can be ready and can only offer this service during visiting hours
- Owners are not permitted in the room while we perform euthanasia
- If this is important to you, which is understandable, a veterinarian clinic will be better able to offer a unique owner experience that we are unable to offer
- We will treat your pet with respect and console them during the process
How do we perform euthanasia
- Every dog is sedated before performing euthanasia, so that the dog can be as relaxed and comfortable for the process
- We do not sedate cats or other small animals for the euthanasia process, unless we determine it is necessary
- We use a medication specifically intended to end the life of the animal in the most painless and comfortable way possible
- Only staff who are euthanasia certified are permitted to sedate and euthanize animals
After Death Options
The Rushville Animal Shelter is unable to offer cremation options to owners at this time.
- Owners may leave their deceased animal at the shelter to be mass cremated – no ashes returned – for free
- Owners may take their pet home – bring a blanket/box for transporting home
- The Heavenly Hound offers cremation and pickup services
- Jackman’s Animal Shelter and Buck Creek Veterinary Clinic offer cremation services
