Pet Food Pantry

At the Rushville Animal Shelter we have a Pet Food Pantry available to our Rush County residents

  • Membership required (see below)
  • We stock this pantry with donated kibble, canned, and treat items
    • Cat litter is never offered as this is always needed for the shelter
  • Items vary day to day, hour to hour
  • We do not place items on hold; it is first come, first served
  • The pantry is only open during our visiting hours

Pet Food Pantry Membership

In order to serve as many of our Rush County residents we require a membership for the pantry. Your first visit will take the longest, but subsequent visits will be quick.

  • You MUST be a Rush County Resident
    • On your first visit, you will need to provide a photo ID and proof of address. If your address is not current on your ID, bring in a rental agreement, current mortgage statement, current utility bill, or car registration as your proof
  • You will need to provide us with the information for the animals in your home
    • Names, ages, sexes, breeds, color, fixed or not, and microchip information
  • You will have your photo taken for your membership profile
  • All animals in your home must be microchipped
    • If adopted from us, we already have that information on file
    • If microchipped through another shelter or a vet clinic, bring paperwork that shows their microchip number
    • You can also bring your pet(s) in to be scanned for their chip
    • If they are not microchipped already, bring them in on your first visit or by your second visit for a FREE microchip
  • Visits are limited to every 2 weeks
  • You will receive 1 bucket of cat and/or dog food at your first visit, and you must bring the bucket(s) back for each visit and return them when you are finished with the program
  • You will receive a membership card at your first visit. Bring it with you for each visit
  • You will agree to not add any additional animals to your home during your membership period, or you can choose to be removed from the membership in order to add another animal
  • The membership is active for 6 months, then you will need to re-register for another 6 months
  • This program is only intended for temporary and supplemental assistance
    • Save some money on buying food so you can get your pets fixed!
    • Fill a gap in a pay period
    • To get back on your feet during a difficult period of time, etc.
  • Your membership is non-transferable, and you, as the member, will be required to be the one to pick up the food each visit

Community Pet Closet

We also have a pet closet on the inside of our front door, on the right, available to anyone and everyone, no matter where you live.

  • No food is in this closet
  • Items are pet-related and are stocked with items donated to us that we are unable to use or have too many of
  • Items change daily/hourly
  • No holds are offered on items
  • Cat litter is never offered, as this is always needed for the shelter
