Trap and Pet Carrier Lending

We offer to all Rush County residents the ability to borrow Live Traps or Pet Carriers at no charge.

Requirements:

  • Must complete and sign an Animal Trap or Carrier Loan Agreement.
  • Must present a driver’s License or State ID.
  • Must be a Rush County resident and show proof (address on ID is accepted)
  • May borrow Live Traps up to 7 days at a time; any additional time would be subject to availability.
  • May borrow Pet Carriers for 24 hours; any additional time would be subject to availability.
  • You may request a drop-off/pick-up service for traps
    • This service is only available during our visiting hours
    • This service is only for the trapping of domestic animals (cats, dogs)
    • This service is limited to Rush County only
    • This service is not available with the resident’s personal traps; our traps must be used
  • The Live Traps and Pet Carriers are City Property and are expected to be returned promptly and in the condition they were lent.
    • Borrowers will be expected to be financially responsible for any lost, damaged, or stolen traps or carriers in their possession

Rules for borrowing Live Traps:

  • If wildlife is caught, intended or not, the animal will either
    • need to be transported by the borrower and humanely euthanized by a veterinarian at the expense of the borrower
    • need to be transported by the borrower and released on a property with the permission of the property owner

    • DO NOT bring wildlife to the Rushville Animal Shelter, as we cannot legally relocate it outside the city limits, nor are we licensed or trained to handle wildlife.
  • IF a domestic animal is caught, intended or not, the animal will either need to be
    • Brought to the Rushville Animal Shelter during visiting hours
      • Or picked up by us during visiting hours with our trap drop-off/pick-up service
      • The animal MUST be brought to us during visiting hours, leaving the animal unattended on the shelter’s property without staff approval or knowledge places the animal at unnecessary risk of injury, escaping, and/or death, and you will face a fine of $150 per animal for doing so.
    • Transported by the borrower and returned to its owner
    • Transported by the borrower and released on a property with the permission of the property owner
    • Transported by the borrower to a veterinarian clinic
